Plan of Study for Graduate Students

To submit your Plan of Study, go to http://graduate.auburn.edu/gspoststudent/ and fill in the form at that site. Submit to the Graduate School both

  • the electronic form and

  • a hard copy which has been signed by the committee members.

    In addition, please give a copy to the GPO for our departmental records.

    Master's Students

    a. You need at least 30 hours in total.

    b. You can transfer up to 6 hours.

    c. You have 2 options:

      i. Thesis Option: You must have at least 4 hours of Master's Thesis (MATH 7990) and can count up to 6 hours for your thesis (you can register for more than 6 hours if necessary).
      ii. Non-Thesis Option: You must include 3 hours of Master's Project (MATH 7980) and can register for more than 6 hours if necessary.

    d. Of the 30 hours, you can count, at most, 6 hours of a previous master's degree towards a second master's degree.

    e. Your committee must consist of at least 3 professors.

    f. The plan of study must be filed no later than the semester before you graduate.

    Ph.D. Students

    a. You need at least 60 hours in total.

    b. You must complete at least 18 hours at Auburn.

    c. The number of hours you can transfer is not limited.

    d. You must count 10 hours of MATH 8990 for your dissertation. (You can register for more than 10 hours if necessary.)

    e. At least 30 of the hours must be graded coursework (A,B,C,D,F).

    f. At most 4 hours of a Master's Thesis can be used.

    g. Your committee must consist of at least 3 professors.

    h. The plan of study must be filed no later than the semester before you graduate.

    i. An entire semester must intervene between your general oral examination
    (i.e., preliminary oral) and your final oral examination.
